TO HIGHLIGHT THE TRIP:
THE GROUP
Groups have a maximum of 10 travelers, accompanied by a Spanish-speaking guide. Travelers reserve their place, regardless of the number, and we join the group until we reach a maximum of 10 members. This small group size fosters close and almost familiar treatment among its members, creating an excellent atmosphere. Although in general the groups are usually full, if a minimum of 6 travelers is not reached, a supplement of €150 per person will be applied, but the departure will not be cancelled. This supplement will not constitute a reason for cancellation due to
part of the traveler. Ask us.
STAGES
The programmed stages are designed for a beginner level, with the exception of days 3 and 7, which are intermediate level. During the route we can easily carry out various activities that represent the spirit of the island such as: doing a multitude of
trekking in various terrains, crossing rivers, crossing lava fields, bathing in natural hot springs, walking through ash fields…
The days range between 5 and 9 hours of daily walking at a gentle pace, with frequent stops. The guide will adapt the pace depending on the group and the weather conditions. Although the weather is usually good, the weather is unstable and it is advisable to be prepared for rain or wind. Every day, after the route and, if the weather permits, the guide will take an optional walk near the refuge.
During all the nights of the journey we will stay in the different shelters along the way, so we will not take tents with us. We are in charge of bringing the food to the shelters in Landmannalaugar, Alftavatn and Thorsmork, except Emstrur, so the only food to be carried daily will be the picnic and dinner and breakfast on the day of Emstrur (freeze-dried food). Before the start of the route, Manaslu Adventures has prepared food deposits in the shelters that we will find along the route. Thanks to this system, you do not have to carry all the food for the trip in your backpack and the level is much smoother. Even so, it is advisable to be used to walking with the backpack on your back.
The weight of the backpack for trekking usually ranges between 8 and 10 kilos, including the sleeping bag.
CLIMATE, TEMPERATURES, HOURS OF LIGHT
The temperatures in summer are quite pleasant. Although the weather is usually good, from experience we know that it is unpredictable and can be very changeable, so it is advisable to be prepared for rain or wind in a cool environment, with temperatures that range approximately between 8oC and even 15oC on sunny days. June 20-22 hours of light. July 22-18 hours of light. August 17-14 hours of light. September 14-11 hours of light.
FEED
Manaslu Adventures provides supplies at the shelters for all outings, so there is no need to carry meals during the trek, just the day’s picnic and dinner and breakfast for the Emstrur shelter. However, for vegetarians or people who need a certain diet, we recommend bringing a specific product that you think is necessary for trekking since all the food has been transported to the shelters beforehand. In these portages we include some foods for vegetarians and others gluten-free, for celiacs.
During the excursion days, during the day we will have a picnic-type diet and at night we will cook in the shelters with meals proposed by the guide and that he will prepare in collaboration with the travelers. Below we indicate a list of the foods that we can find along the route:
If you have a food allergy or intolerance, the traveler must notify Manaslu Adventures in advance, at the time of booking the trip. Manaslu Adventures will try to adapt the travel diet or will communicate if this is impossible.
ACCOMMODATION
In all shelters and hostels it is necessary to use a sleeping bag. We recommend that the sleeping bag have a comfortable temperature of 5o to 10o C. We will find individual hot water showers in all the shelters (for a fee). We will sleep in double bunk beds and, sometimes, depending on the space available, we will be able to make individual use of them. The rooms are common and mixed. It is not guaranteed that there will be the possibility of using plugs during the trekking stages, we recommend that you have spare batteries planned. Many accommodations, due to their tradition, lack pillows and blinds, so you can bring an eye mask and a small or inflatable pillow.
On this trip we use 2 types of accommodation:

We will walk between snow-capped mountains and streams caused by the melting of the numerous snowfields that will come our way. We look out onto an idyllic balcony, from which we can see the green meadows and mountains around Lake Alftavatn. This is the only possible point to cross it for kilometers around. Little by little the desert landscape gives way to the greenery of the Thórsmörk valley (which translates as “Thor’s forest”), undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Iceland, where we can admire the glacial tongues descending to the valley of Thor, as well as meltwater joining the current of the Markafljót River. We will advance along a path that sometimes gets lost until we reach the valley.

In this hill, where the Mýrdallsjokull and Eyjafjallajokull glaciers meet, we see for the first time the great Atlantic Ocean, the goal of our trip. As a culmination, we will walk most of the day along descending terrain admiring the 24 waterfalls that the Skógar River offers us, from the gentlest and calmest to the most powerful and mighty, ending with the famous Skógafoss, an impressive waterfall with a drop of 62 meters. . Also, in the port, we can taste fresh fish and visit the Harpa building, a concert and conference center made up of a network of glass hexagons. It is also worth a walk through the upper area of the city, where we will get lost among charming wooden houses with small gardens. Iceland is the 18th largest island in the world and the second largest in Europe. Its rivers run from the center, where the Highlands are, towards the coast. Lakes and glaciers cover 14.3% of the country and only 23% is covered by vegetation. The main glacier is Vatnajökull, the largest in Europe. The island itself is composed of basalt and petrified lava with low levels of silica, as well as other rock types such as rhyolites and andesites.
The climate of the Icelandic coast is classified as oceanic subpolar, that is, it has cool, short summers and mild winters, with temperatures that do not drop below -3 °C.
There are climatic variations between one part of the island and another. In general, the south coast is warmer, wetter and windier than the north coast. The lowlands in the interior and in the north of the island are more arid. Snowfall is more frequent in the north than the south. The inland highlands of Iceland are the coldest area of the entire island.
