Mount Kilimanjaro is a triple-summit volcano located in the northeast of the Republic of Tanzania, very close to the border with Kenya, about 300 km south of the equator. It is the highest peak on the African continent and is therefore part of the group known as the 7 summits. Its three peaks – Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira – are craters of volcanic origin, with Uhuru Peak on Mount Kibo being the highest point at 5,895 meters above sea level and the 4th most prominent mountain in the world only behind Everest (Nepal and People’s Republic of China), Aconcagua (Argentina), and Mount McKinley (United States).
Manaslu Adventures offers you the ascent along the Marangu route. The Marangu route is the most popular route to ascend Mount Kilimajaro and is considered the easiest. It does not require technical mountain training but a good state of fitness to successfully complete the ascent to the roof of Africa. Approximately 80% of people who try to reach the top every year use this route. This route is the only one that has shelters where you can spend the nights, the so-called Mandara Hut, Horombo Hut and Kibo Hut. All three are provided with beds, sunlight and very basic latrines. They also have running water and blankets and pillows are supplied, although a sleeping bag is highly recommended. Alternatively, Manaslu Adventures offers you the possibility of ascending via an alternative route, the Machame route, less frequented but also less comfortable for the ascent due to the lack of shelters on the way up. This route requires more experience and unlike the Marangu, it is not a circular route and the descent is along the same path as the ascent to the summit, which is always more monotonous.

Crampons or ice axes are generally not needed.
First aid kit with first aid such as aspirin and ibuprofen, bandages and plasters, disinfectant, anti-diarrhea medicines, antihistamines, anti-malaria pills, etc.
Arrival and transfer to the Springland Hotel in Moshi. Rest of the day free. Accommodation.
Early in the morning, departure by minibus to the entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park (Marangu gate). Altitude 1,840 meters. We meet our team of porters and cooks. The journey from Moshi to Marangu is a marvel of tropical rural landscape: coffee, bananas, tobacco, all kinds of tropical flowers and fruits, giant baobabs and the mountain landscape in the background. We begin the ascent to the Mandara refuge; It is a 3 hour journey, track at first and good path through the jungle later. Night in shelter.
After breakfast we begin the ascent. There is a first section with a certain moderate slope, until leaving the vegetated area. Abundant vegetation and fauna (monkeys, iguanas…). The landscape changes and we enter a high savannah, around 3,000 meters, which will be a landscape constant until the last stage, in which we will enter a high mountain area. We will see giant lobelias, savannah flowers such as the “red hot pecker”, giant senecios which is the most characteristic and spectacular species in the area, immortelles (helicrysum) and savanna bushes.
Horombo hut is a group of bungalow-type shelters and cooking houses, with a large shelter-dining room and park nursery. You can purchase soft drinks and mineral water in this and all other shelters, as well as chocolates and food for the day. The views towards Moshi and Arusha from this altitude are magnificent. From here you can see Mount Mawenzi (5,149 meters), twin of the Uhuru peak (freedom peak), as the locals call the summit of “Kili”. Duration of the stage: 5 to 7 hours.
Full board. Day for acclimatization, we recommend trekking to the Mwency refuge. Accommodation.
It is a gentle path, but we will begin to notice the symptoms of altitude (difficulty breathing, fatigue and headache without causing severe pain). All of this is normal at this altitude, as long as there are no other symptoms such as vomiting or loss of balance, in which case you should descend immediately.
The image of the final crater of Uhuru with its eternal snow motivates us enormously for the night ascension the next day. We will have dinner very soon. Duration of the stage: 4 hours.
After a few hours in the sleeping bag where some will have actually slept, but many others will not (due to insomnia typical of the altitude – nothing serious -), we will leave between 00:00 and 02:00 in the morning, depending on the weather conditions. .
Gillman’s point is a key point in the ascent, almost 2 km await us. From the edge to the summit in an easy route but difficult due to the altitude. You have to make a great effort here and be very excited to reach the roof of Africa so as not to turn around and “take it for granted.” An intermediate point on the ridge is Stella point (5,700 meters) where the “Marangu route” (ours) and the “Machame route” converge. From here we begin to border the Diamond Glacier, an impressive barrier of seracs, eternal ice just 3 degrees south of latitude above the equator. The return to Kibo is long but comfortable and we feel better as we descend in altitude. From Kibo to the summit and back to Kibo can cost between 9 and 14 hours. Once in Kibo hut we eat something and continue on the way to Horombo hut where we will sleep peacefully, much better than in Kibo. This tour lasts between 2 and 3 hours.
We will descend the first 2 stages of the climb in about 5 to 7 hours until we reach the entrance to the park, where we will be given the Kilimanjaro ascent certificate and we will say goodbye to our porters and cooks. Transfer by vehicle to Moshi and accommodation and breakfast at the Springland hotel.
Breakfast. Departure in a 4×4 vehicle, specially prepared for Safari, with an English-speaking driver and cook to Arusha. Picnic lunch and continuation to Lake Manyara National Park. In the afternoon we will go on a safari through the National Park. Dinner and overnight at the Highview Hotel.
Breakfast. In the morning we will visit one of the natural wonders of the world, the Ngorongoro Crater, a huge volcanic caldera 19.2 km in diameter by 600 m deep and 304 km2 long that houses different habitats where a large number of animals develop. wild: zebras, gazelles, buffalo, wildebeest, eland, rhinoceros, elephant… We can also observe predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah, jackal, a large number of hyenas… Its interior lake is a point of attraction for numerous birds among the which highlights the pink flamingo. Picnic lunch. Exit the crater and continue to Moshi. Accommodation.

In Africa, the culture of tipping is a traditional element of gratitude, which local staff (driver and cook) expect as extra compensation, for a job well done, at the end of the itinerary. Tips are completely voluntary. Each traveler can give (or not give) what seems most appropriate to the services received by the local staff.
As a guide, it can be estimated as correct:
These amounts ARE NOT FOR EACH TRAVELER, they are FOR THE WHOLE GROUP.
Tip guides and porters on Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru
• The tip will be delivered in an envelope to the Springland Hotel after the trek. You can use US dollars, Euros, TZ shillings, or a combination of these currencies. It will help if you bring small bills to tip each person individually.
• The estimated tip is $10 to $15 per day for guides, $10 per day for assistant guides and cooks, $5 to $7 per day and for each porter. The tip is not per person but for the entire group of climbers.
• The climbing equipment is made up of:
• 1 guide for 8 climbers, 1 assistant guide for every 3 climbers; 1 cook for every 8 climbers
• Porters:
o 2 porters per climber on the Marangu route (minimum 4 porters)
or 3 porters per climber on 6 or 7 day trek ascents (minimum of 5 porters)
o 4 porters per climber on the 8-day Lemosho Route (minimum of 8 porters)
• Estimated budget: $150 to $200 per climber for a 6-Day ascent.
• Gifts: Guides and porters also appreciate gifts of warm clothing, footwear, etc.
• You can also invite your guides upon return to the Hotel for a drink or dinner as a thank you in addition to the tip.
Safari tips and cook.
• $15 per day for the driver guide and $10 per day for the cook per group.
Expectations
• Tips do not depend on whether you reach the summit or not, but on the attitude and professionalism of the guides, porters…
• If your guides and porters are unhappy and request tips that exceed your estimates, please inform Zara at the Springland Hotel and do not feel obligated to tip more. If they pressure you during the trek days for tips, inform Zara, since these actions go against our company policy.
Food during the trip will be sufficient and varied. Apart from the meals that are eaten in a local restaurant, on trekking or on safaris in the camping safari mode, a cook will travel with us and we will bring all the food we need. Breakfasts are: coffee or tea, milk, toast, butter, jam, cereal, sometimes scrambled eggs with bacon, sausages and fruit. The midday lunch is usually a simple light picnic.
Dinner will be, like breakfast, the “strong” dish of the day: vegetables, pasta, meat, chicken and some other dishes with “our” flavors. As we said, on the trip we will be accompanied by a cook who is used to preparing field meals for groups; he will be responsible and in charge of this matter. In our vehicle we will carry all the necessary utensils, plates and cutlery for everyone.
For the tour we will have vehicles prepared for the route on which the trip takes place. In the case of safaris, it will be specially prepared for them with the roof prepared to be able to take photographs and have a better vision when locating or observing animals.
The vehicles used are usually Toyota Land Cruisers or Land Rovers as they are more suitable for the terrain. For large groups we use 4×4 vans as it is more convenient for our clients to be all together in the same vehicle, and it is also more economical and better for the environment.
Many of the drivers have been trained in customer relations, tourism-related issues, environmental issues and vehicle maintenance. They are very familiar with the routes we do. These drivers are always experienced, reliable and knowledgeable about the areas they will take you to.
During the summer months, the daytime temperature in this area of Africa will be around 25º-30º and the nighttime temperature between 15º and 20º. A change of warm clothes and a raincoat will help us for the cold night camping on the edge of Ngorongoro where the temperature can drop to 5º (at an altitude above 2000m) and for possible climatic variations. For those who climb Kilimanjaro in the last stages, the temperature can drop below 0º. Reaching -15º
The luggage carried by the porters is limited to 15 Kg. Overweight or extra luggage will require an extra porter at $5/day.
Store electronic equipment in waterproof backpacks (double layer if possible).
Wrap clothes in plastic bags.
In your personal day backpack, carry: water, sunglasses, camera, binoculars, waterproof pants and a jacket at least.
Add any other items you may use during the day, as you may not see your carrier until the end of the day.
You can bring old thermal garments as gifts for the guides and porters or donations for the “Mount Kilimanjaro Porters Society”.
You can leave extra luggage in a locked storage room at the Springlands Hotel free of charge.
You can leave valuables in a safe at Springlands Hotel for $1/day.
