Manaslu Adventures offers you the climb to the highest mountain in Africa with the aim of enjoying theMachame routeand its different ecosystems.
Mount Kilimanjaro is a triple-summit volcano located in the northeast of theRepublic of Tanzania, very close to the border with Kenya, about 300 meters away. km south of the equator. It is the highest peak on the African continent and is therefore part of the group known as the 7 summits. Its three peaks – Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira – are craters of volcanic origin, with Uhuru Peak on Mount Kibo being the highest point at 5,895 meters above sea level and the 4th most prominent mountain in the world only behind Everest (Nepal and People’s Republic of China), Aconcagua (Argentina) and Mount McKinley (United States).
The ascent will be via the Machame route, the second most used route to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro and is considered one of the most beautiful routes, which is why the number grows every year. number of people using this route. The greater demand of this route has motivated Machame to be nicknamed the “Whiskey” route compared to the Marangu route or “Coca-cola” route.
Although the terrain is somewhat steeper than the other route and some mountain experience is recommended to opt for this variant, the height gain caused by this circuit is quite progressive and Therefore, it improves the ability to acclimatize unlike the other route, especially due to the days spent at 4,000 m circumventing the south face of the mountain.
The need for a greater spirit of adventure to travel the Machame route translates into accommodation, since there are no shelters as is the case in the Marangu route and must be done using tents in places designated for this purpose. The camps usually only have very basic latrines.
Another advantage of this path compared to the Marangu route is the descent that, in order to make a circular route, is usually done along the Mweka route, a direct descent that has an intermediate camp to spend the night.
From 2nd to 14th of June
From 22nd of July to 1st of August
From 3rd to 12th of October
Consult other dates:
From mid-December to the end of February and from mid-June to October.
The rest of the months correspond to wet seasons in the area with a high probability of rain.
The trip will last 10 days, 8 days of trekking.
From 2 to 10 people.
The first night we will stay in a family hotel located near the city of Moshi (rooms with shower). The hotel has a restaurant, bar, shop, small garden, swimming pool and Internet access.
The need for a greater spirit of adventure to travel the Machame route is translated into the following accommodations, since we do not have shelters as is the case on the Marangu route. We will stay in tents that our porters will set up in designated places. We will also have latrines for hygiene needs.
Medium difficulty. Required physical background and being familiar with trekking and the High Mountains.
In general, the route does not present any added difficulty, although you must be prepared to face significant slopes. In addition, altitudes exceeding 3,000m are covered, reaching up to 5,800m. The altitude is, therefore, the most relevant difficulty to which we will try to adapt through the first two days of acclimatization.

We will arrive at the Machame Route camp (3000m) in the afternoon. Ascent of 1,200 m and 5 to 6 hours walking.
After breakfast we leave the giant heather area and walk across wide open moorland to camp next to Shira Cave at 3,840m. The herds of elands that we will have the opportunity to see have fascinating geological features in the ancient volcanic caldera if we choose to take an optional half-hour walk in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight at Shira camp. Ascent of 840 m and 4 to 5 hours walking.
From Shira, we will climb towards the main peak of Kibo, with the western glaciers clearly visible across the rugged volcanic rock desert. Skirting its base and under the imposing western Breach, we will descend to the sheltered Barranco Valley. 6 to 7 hours and 110m of total ascent, but having climbed much higher and descended lower helps a lot with acclimatization. Dinner and accommodation at the Barranco camp. 3950m.
Climb the steep Barranco wall but with easy sections and transfer back to the Karanga Valley where we will have a break for lunch.
After lunch and already full of energy, we will face a walk to Barafu Hut 4600m, after having walked a total of 7 to 8 hours and ascended 650m. We will have fantastic views of Mawenzi Peak from the camp after we have completed a day
longer hike which now requires you to relax properly in preparation for the challenging summit hike we will have first thing the next morning.
Crucial day of Trekking. Beginning of the ascent at 1am, preparing to climb a frozen scree in which we will have very cool weather. We will arrive at Stella Point on the edge of the crater just at sunrise in another 40 minutes and finally, we will reach the deepest point.
top of the mainland (Uhuru Peak) usually in a warm environment and sun peeking over the top.
After a photo session, we will return to the Barafu hut for breakfast and then go down to the Mweka camp (3400m) for dinner and prepare for the night route.

In Africa, the culture of tipping is a traditional element of gratitude, which local staff (driver and cook) expect as extra compensation, for a job well done, at the end of the itinerary. Tips are completely voluntary. Each traveler can give (or not give) what seems most appropriate to the services received by the local staff.
As a guide, it can be estimated as correct:
These amounts ARE NOT FOR EACH TRAVELER, they are FOR THE WHOLE GROUP.
Tip guides and porters on Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru
• The tip will be delivered in an envelope to the Springland Hotel after the trek. You can use US dollars, Euros, TZ shillings, or a combination of these currencies. It will help if you bring small bills to tip each person individually.
• The estimated tip is $10 to $15 per day for guides, $10 per day for assistant guides and cooks, $5 to $7 per day and for each porter. The tip is not per person but for the entire group of climbers.
• The climbing equipment is made up of:
• 1 guide for 8 climbers, 1 assistant guide for every 3 climbers; 1 cook for every 8 climbers
• Porters:
o 2 porters per climber on the Marangu route (minimum 4 porters)
or 3 porters per climber on 6 or 7 day trek ascents (minimum of 5 porters)
o 4 porters per climber on the 8-day Lemosho Route (minimum of 8 porters)
• Estimated budget: $150 to $200 per climber for a 6-Day ascent.
• Gifts: Guides and porters also appreciate gifts of warm clothing, footwear, etc.
• You can also invite your guides upon return to the Hotel for a drink or dinner as a thank you in addition to the tip.
Safari tips and cook.
• $15 per day for the driver guide and $10 per day for the cook per group.
Expectations
• Tips do not depend on whether you reach the summit or not, but on the attitude and professionalism of the guides, porters…
• If your guides and porters are unhappy and request tips that exceed your estimates, please inform Zara at the Springland Hotel and do not feel obligated to tip more. If they pressure you during the trek days for tips, inform Zara, since these actions go against our company policy.
For the tour we will have vehicles prepared for the route on which the trip takes place. In the case of safaris, it will be specially prepared for them with the roof prepared to be able to take photographs and have a better vision when locating or observing animals.
The vehicles used are usually Toyota Land Cruisers or Land Rovers as they are more suitable for the terrain. For large groups we use 4×4 vans as it is more convenient for our clients to be all together in the same vehicle, and it is also more economical and better for the environment.
Many of the drivers have been trained in customer relations, tourism-related issues, environmental issues and vehicle maintenance. They are very familiar with the routes we do. These drivers are always experienced, reliable and knowledgeable about the areas they will take you to.
