The Alta route Chamonix – Zermatt is undoubtedly one of the most classic and coveted routes in the world of Trekking and Alta Mountain. It is the journey that unites the two great capitals of the Alps, Chamonix and Zermatt in an exciting route that crosses the most mythical valleys and glaciers of the Central Alps, leaving behind postcard images that we will hardly forget. It owes its classic status not only to its history but also to the beauty of its route. After eight days of crossing, we will finish our epic reaching Zermatt and of course, enjoying one of the most beautiful mountains that can be admired, we are referring to the emblematic Matterhorn or Matterhorn .
Manaslu Adventures offers you to do it this summer, undoubtedly the best time to face this demanding journey, classic among all classics, with the best guarantees. We will leave Chamonix and after 8 days of trekking through the heart of the Alps, we will reach Zermatt. From the tour it is worth highlighting that we will leave with a deep knowledge of the mountains of the Canton of Valais Swiss, since we will cross a large number of valleys until we reach our final destination. In addition, we can rest each day in mountain refuges and hotels and taste regional cuisine.
The high route concept was born with the Chamonix – Zermatt. At the end of the 19th century the Alpine Club (United Kingdom) proposed a summer itinerary between these two alpine towns which they called “The High Level Route”. We had to wait until 1911, for the route to be completed on skis for the first time, and for both the concept and the name to take hold. Since then, mountain itineraries lasting several days and from refuge to refuge have been known as high route.

The final meters before reaching the Pas de Chévres are special since with the help of a wonderful metal structure made up of walkways and two flights of stairs it will help us reach the last hill of the day. Stage that runs through green alpine meadows and ends in the famous Zinal valley. The descent to Moiry is better not described since we would fall short in telling the views and details of this alpine corner.
Distance: 19 km. Elevation: + 1,870 m. Elevation: – 1,860 m. Time: 9 h. We have never done this full day since it would be very hard not only because of the difference in elevation + and – but also because of the accumulation of days in the mountains and what lies ahead.
With escapes option 1.
