Surely you’ve heard of the Golden Fleece and the Argonauts. At Manaslu Adventures we invite you to explore the ancient kingdom of Colchis and the mythical mountains of the Caucasus, where the gods chained Prometheus.
The Greater Caucasus, converted into an authentic and impregnable alpine wall, completely defines the silhouette of a country attached to immense mountains whose peaks, snow-capped all year round, extend vertically, forming one of the most imposing natural borders on the planet.
Georgia is Caucasian at its best, located on the eastern shore of the Black Sea and encased in a capital mountain range. This entire mythological universe, in which Jason and the Argonauts would obtain the Golden Fleece, arises precisely in a nation that originated after the passage of different kingdoms and cultures that left here their footprints.
Svaneti is located in northwest Georgia and is divided between Lower Svaneti and Upper Svaneti. In 1996, UNESCO declared La Alta as a World Heritage Site. It is a historic area with a profile of villages that, due to their composition and architecture, are reminiscent of the settings of the Middle Ages. One of its greatest attractions are the curious towers that dot the area, built between the 9th and 12th centuries. In this trekking we will enjoy magical panoramic views surrounded by mountains that are around 3,000 and 5,000 m high. Svenatia is home to the highest peak of the Caucasus Mountains: Mount Shkhara (5,193). This is what the historian Strabo wrote about the Svans, inhabitants of the region and ethnic subgroup of the Georgians: “Near Dioscuria live the Svans (Soani). By their bravery and strength they surpass almost all the people in the world. They occupy the highest mountains of the Caucasus and control all the neighboring tribes. They have a king and a board of three members. They say that the Svan can make a formidable army out of 200 men, since all men have the same fighting strength” (1st century BC)
