If you want to visit Asturias, it is a mandatory stop not because we say so but because it is almost a tradition to visit Covadonga and the Lakes of Covadonga. Well, if we remember, the Asturian singer Melendi already said it in one of his songs, “Covadonga is the most beautiful Santina on earth.” There is no doubt that it is one of the most famous places in Asturias and we will have the possibility on this route to visit the 3 Lakes of Covadonga: Lake Ercina, Lake Bricial and Lake Enol. And not only that, on our way we will cross examples of the mining past such as the Buferrera Mines, a mining exploitation of great historical value important to recognize the work and life of the miners who for centuries have been pillars for the economy of Asturias. . During this route we will see the incredible landscape of the Western Massif of the Picos de Europa, it will be a good start for all the days that lie ahead. After the route, we will have the possibility to visit Covadonga, the Cathedral, learn the history of the battle of Covadonga with which King Pelayo and his army began the Reconquest of Spain. We can also enter the Cave to see the Santina of Covadonga.
At the end of this route, we will have to recharge our batteries for the next day and we will do it in the following way, we will return to Cangas de Onís and there we will have time to visit this city that has so much history to teach us because we can visit some of the bridges best known here in Asturias, the Roman bridge with the Victory Cross (we know it is a good place to take many photos)
Distance: 11 km (One way) and 11km (return). There is the possibility of returning on foot or returning by 4×4 with a biologist who explains the landscape, flora, fauna. (Optional: €35/person, you must reserve in advance to have a place).
Elevation: 460m+ and 460m- (Round trip)
Duration: 3.30 hours (One way)
Second day, our next objective begins in the direction of Poncebos, a small mountain center integrated into the Council of Cabrales, located in the Center of the Picos de Europa, this place is known for being the beginning of the Cares Route and the Bulnes Road. Perhaps, of all these places, Cabrales is familiar to you and perhaps because of its name similar to a blue type cheese with a strong flavor and yes, if you were thinking about it, it is in this council where this cheese is made, but… We will leave that to the guide who explains more about it and we continue on our way. Today we will visit a magical place, a gorge unique for its beauty and its historical and geological importance: the Great Cares Gorge. The surroundings are beautiful and, except for the slope at the beginning, it will be 11 kilometers flat along the Cares River gorge to the town of Caín (León). The road was built between 1945 and 1951 to carry out maintenance on the canal that carries water from Caín (León) to Camermeña (Asturias) and then to the Poncebos Power Plant. It was the first power plant built in Spain in 1921 and the second in Europe, after the first in England in 1880. Formerly there was a road to access the imposing canal work, some remains of which can still be seen. The construction of the canal began in 1916 and finished in 1921. More than 400 people worked on this work at one time. Walking we will realize the enormous efforts of the men who worked here chopping the entire path by hand, only with a “pick and shovel.” We will continue walking to the Bolín bridge, where we will have the only source of the entire path.
After about 2 km we will arrive at Caín (León), a characteristic town of shepherds and mountaineers, where we can eat and regain strength. After the route, we will stop in Arenas de Cabrales, a town famous for Cabrales cheese and grazing and for being the wedge of Spanish Alpinism. We will have the chance to try one of the best blue cheeses in the world, the famous Queso
Cabrales and have a good cider together at the “Los Guías” Café Bar, where we will feel at home surrounded by mountain photos.
Distance: 9.6 km,
Elevation difference: 450 m+ and 450 m-
Duration: 4 hours of route plus walk through the town
We can go up to the Mirador del Naranjo de Bulnes (10′-15′ more climb) and see the King of Peaks in Europe: the Naranjo de Bulnes.
Third day, we will return to Poncebos, to take the cobblestone path that leads to Bulnes that captured our curiosity so much yesterday. A question will be on our minds during the route: “How could the inhabitants of Bulnes access their homes only by trails without having a road to get there by car?” We will enter and follow the path that leads to access to Bulnes,
marked by a path through the Tejo Canal or Texu Canal, a natural path with unevenness and an impressive rocky landscape where we will see the spectacular Amuesa Wall. These formations will tell us a few stories about the locals, who crossed those paths on foot. This town is also so unique because there is no road and so you cannot get there by car. This way we can enjoy more of what is natural around us. As we follow the course of the Tejo River, with crystal-clear waters, the path begins to make some zig-zags, as we gain height the valley opens up and the panoramic views of the path we leave behind will make us stop and admire the landscape. We will visit Bulnes, we will stop to regain strength and if our legs allow us, we will go up to the Mirador del Naranjo de Bulnes, about 10-15′ more, but the Naranjo de Bulnes is not worth seeing! After the route, we will go down to Las Arenas de Cabrales and we will be able to visit the Cueva del Queso and discover the secrets hidden behind a Cabrales cheese, the life of the shepherds, their traditions, how it is produced, where it is kept for its curing. . (Optional: you must reserve in advance to have a place).
.
Distance: 11.48 km
Elevation difference: 566 m+ and 566 m-
Duration: 5 hours.
Let’s go for the fourth day! What does this day have in store for us… Well, we still have a lot to see, learn and know and if not ask our guide. We will begin the beginning of our route in the town and capital of the Ponga council, San Juan de Beleño. As they say today, our mind is Pa, Ponga (Why would it be?) if it were only today… But let’s focus and start our path, we will follow the path and we will notice that at one point we will descend until we find an old stone bridge that crosses over the Riega d’Ameu. A few meters away, we will see a chestnut forest where we can appreciate the beauty and different ages of these trees. And before diving back into the lushness of the valley floor, we will see a viewpoint with privileged views of the Sierra de Cainava and Pico Recuencu, a landscape where the color green is predominant, something that stands out in our Asturian Natural Paradise. We must not forget that these views are integrated into the protected Biosphere Reserve, truly spectacular and if you are left wanting more, you will have to return to climb Pico Tiatordos and Pico Campigüeños, among others. Upon returning from the route we will stop at the Interpretation Center of the Ponga Natural Park in the town of San Juan de Beleño and we will have time to visit it.
For the more daring, you can bring your swimsuit to take a good dip to relax after days of trekking.
For the last day we have a surprise and it is an easy, quiet route and only a few hours (we know you will be tired). The big surprise is what this route hides and it is one of the wonders of nature, a natural pool and it is called the Olla de San Vicente. To get here, we will walk next to the Dobra River, we will pass the natural stone Dobra bridge and we will observe the beauty of this path, finally we will be surprised by the color of the water of this natural pool but BE CAREFUL, do not be fooled by its appetizing water and the dip. that you deserve after these days, well we will tell you something and better in Asturian Fae a cold that bites the snot and scratches the skin and we don’t tell you anymore to draw your own conclusions, although he who doesn’t risk doesn’t win as they say. .
