Swedish Lapland, north of the Arctic Circle, is a territory that is home to the last great natural spaces in Europe, to the point of having been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. A sparsely inhabited territory. , where small populated centers are generally located at great distances from each other.
We will get to know the land of the SAMI, the traditional reindeer herders of northern Europe, in one of the most virgin places on the continent. It will be an ideal setting to enjoy the fascinating Northern Lights, a spectacle that seems taken from another world.
From Stockholm we will travel by sleeper train to Luleå. It is the most important city in Swedish Lapland, protected by its archipelago with more than 1,700 islets. When the sea is frozen, you can go sledding and enjoy the reflection of the sun on the ice.
We will arrive at the heart of Lapland by private transfer and we will settle into our hotel in the municipality of Jokkmokk. It will be our base to visit some national parks on snowshoes, through their magical forests and lakes.
On each of our outings, as long as the weather is good, we will have the opportunity to admire those long-awaited Northern Lights Auroras are not usually seen when and where we want. Therefore, travel planning must be flexible. The group will be accompanied every day by our specialized guide who will decide at each moment the valley in the best conditions where we will go to “hunt” this beautiful phenomenon.
Optionally we can take dog sled rides, snowmobiles, cross-country skiing or visit those beloved reindeer herders. We meet our guide at Stockholm station at 7:30 p.m. We will review the briefing and have dinner together. We begin our adventure in a cozy sleeper train that will take us to the town of Luleå.
We arrived at Luleå around 10 in the morning. We are in the most important municipality of Swedish Lapland, a town that draws attention for the multitude of islets that dot its coast. A more impressive sight when, at this time of year, its frozen waters allow you to skate on them.
In Luleå the vehicle that our guide will drive throughout the week will be waiting for us. We began the road trip to the municipality of Jokkmokk. These 2 hours of route will take us through idyllic white settings.
On the way we will stop in the beautiful town of Gammelstad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. It is the best preserved example of a city-church, a very widespread type of settlement in northern Scandinavia. The parishioners, who lived in surrounding fields, had a very difficult time returning to their homes due to the weather conditions. They began to build some coquettish red wooden houses that gave shape to this curious municipality.
We will arrive at our hotel in Jokkmokk, base of operations for this spectacular adventure. After dropping off our suitcases and taking a short rest, we will begin the first route. If the weather is good, it will also be our first contact with the fascinating Northern Lights.
We continue enjoying this unique experience! For 3 days we will get to know the magical corners that this idyllic destination hosts, such as the impressive Vaikijaur Lake and the Muddus National Park. We will move on snowshoes through white routes through forests and icy waters.
The sighting of the Northern Lights depends on solar activity, the cold atmosphere and clear skies. At Manaslu we have prepared our program in one of the best places to “hunt” auroras and your sighting will be subject to the aforementioned factors. For this reason, the group will enjoy 3 days with total flexibility to adapt to the surrounding conditions. Our guide will assess at all times the best valley where you can admire this phenomenon.
The trip includes 2 days of snowshoe rental. Additionally, the group can hire different activities with local operators, each one more exciting!: snowmobile excursion, dog sled excursion, cross-country ski ride, visit to a farm Sami reindeer herders with traditional food and storytelling by the fire, etc.
We arrived at the last day of this trip with a backpack loaded with great experiences. After a delicious Swedish breakfast, we will enjoy a walk through Jokkmokk to say goodbye to its streets, its people, its sights.
We head to Luleå in our private transfer and in the evening we will travel on the sleeper train that will take us back to the capital. Once in Stockholm we can wander through the Gamla Stan (old town), one of the most striking historical centers in Europe that has a special charm. We can attend the changing of the Guard or do the last shopping and eat in one of its various restaurants.
