Mongolia is a republic located between Russia and China, with an area three times larger than Spain but with a population of just 3 million people, one of the lowest in the world. It is a country of great opportunities to explore and disconnect from other great destinations. Today, very few countries have maintained their original nomadic culture and customs. Almost half of the population is nomadic, living in their Ger, which is the traditional home, and herding their livestock seasonally.
In the south of the country, enormous dunes of fine sand, twisted gorges running through rocky mountains and vast steppes where isolated groups of nomads tend their livestock, make up the Gobi Desert. Eggs and remains of dinosaurs have been discovered beneath its surface and are now exhibited in the Museum of Natural Sciences in Ulaanbaatar. In northern Mongolia, Lake Khuvsgul, 136 kilometers long, is Asia’s second largest freshwater reservoir. In the winter its surface freezes and allows the circulation of vehicles, although it has been prohibited to avoid polluting discharges. On its shores, reindeer herders maintain ancestral cultures permeated with shamanism.
On its western border rise the Altai Mountains exceeding four thousand meters in height. Small communities of hunters of Kazakh origin hunt with eagles riding through these mountains.
These are some of the peculiar geographical features of a country that will leave an indelible memory in the visitor who will also discover other attractions, equally powerful, in the culture of its inhabitants.
