Morocco has four mountain ranges: the Rif, the Middle Atlas, the Great Atlas and the Anti-Atlas. The highest mountain is Toubkal, which reaches 4,162 meters in altitude. Between the Rif and the Middle Atlas is the Sebú valley. From Larache to Agadir is the Atlantic plain and between the former and the Middle Atlas there is a plateau located above 500 meters of altitude. To the south of the Antiatlas the Sahara Desert already begins.
The main rivers: Sebú, Muluya, Oum Er-Rbia, Tensift, Sus and Draa.
The climate is Mediterranean, with a clearly winter distribution of rainfall (ranging between 300 and 800 mm and 1000 mm in the Tangier-Tetouan region) and January temperatures around 12–13 °C on the coast and the 10 °C in Fez, Meknes, Oujda and Marrakech. July temperatures are around 25°C on the coast and inland places. In the mountains, rainfall is more abundant and temperatures are lower. In the Sahara the climate is already desert-like.
Passport: The passport must be valid for at least three months.
Visa: No.
Mandatory vaccinations: None.
To enter Morocco it is necessary to have a valid passport for a minimum of 3 months. The maximum legal stay allowed for tourists is three months a year. If you wish to extend it, you must contact the corresponding police services.
Recommended prevention: None.
Sanitary conditions in Morocco are generally correct. In the main cities, if necessary, you can resort to private clinics where you will have good professionals frequently trained in Spain or France. However, in smaller cities, and in general in rural areas, health facilities are of a much lower level, poorly equipped and with poorly qualified auxiliary personnel. Hospitalization will only be resorted to in cases of extreme urgency, with return to the place of origin being preferable, after appropriate medical advice.
It is advisable to take extreme hygiene measures, paying attention to food (washing fruits well for example), drink (bottled water) and accommodation. It is advisable to avoid the consumption of salads and to prevent intestinal disorders, travel with antidiarrheal pills.
Currency name: Moroccan Dirham (MAD)
The national currency is the dirham divided into 100 cents. The Central Bank sets the rate of the dirham against the main foreign currencies daily. The dirham has no foreign convertibility and its import and export is subject to prior control by the Office des Changes.
There are no restrictions on the entry of foreign currency, which, in any case, must be declared. It is advisable to keep the exchange receipts made in order to avoid possible difficulties at the time of departure.
In hotels, restaurants and bazaars in large cities, payment in foreign currency is accepted, with the risk that the exchange rate applied does not strictly comply with the official price of the day. This does not usually occur if payment is made with foreign credit cards, although this may result in additional surcharges or exchange fees.
