Chimborazo, with its 6,310 meters, is the highest mountain in Ecuador. Like most of the mountains in this country, it is a volcano, currently inactive. It is also the mountain furthest from the center of the Earth because the Earth’s diameter at the equatorial latitude is greater than at the latitude of Everest (approximately 28º north).
Cotopaxi is the 2nd highest peak in the country and one of the most famous volcanoes in South America and, above all, one of the most active. With its 5,897 meters above sea level, it is also among the highest active volcanoes in the world (the twenty-sixth highest). This symmetrical cone volcano is located in the Eastern Cordillera of the Ecuadorian Andes, 60 km south of Quito and 35 km northeast of Latacunga.
