This year we discovered the richness of a territory that unites the incredible French, Catalan and Andorran Pyrenees. A route that demonstrates how the harmony of the mountains is foreign to our administrative borders. An experience of great natural and cultural value.
The 3 nations trekking offers a marked alpine character, with altitudes always above 2,000 meters. This will allow us to enjoy stunning views throughout the entire journey. We will surround ourselves with mythical mountains and peaks such as Carlit (2,921 m), which we will have the option of ascending.
The extension of the itinerary will take us to see a great variety of landscapes, flora and fauna. We will pass through different protected natural areas, such as the Cerdanya – Alt Urgell National Reserve, the Catalan Pyrenees Regional Natural Park or the Orlú National Reserve. We will soak up the beauty of the French Ariège, the multiple lakes of glacial origin that Andorra hosts, extensive green valleys such as Madriu-Perafita-Claror and the best corners of our beloved Alta Cerdanya.
The program is divided into 5 days of activity with overnight stays in mountain refuges. We will overcome important unevenness and long stages. The route does not present technical complications but is physically demanding. An enormously rewarding challenge!

Meeting of the group with the guide in the municipality of Puigcerdà. After a first contact with our new adventure companions, we moved to the Malniu Refuge. The construction is located at the foot of Puigpedrós, the highest peak in the Catalan Cerdanya and next to the Malniu ponds, at 2,138 m high.
We begin our great journey in the Cerdanya – Alt Urgell National Reserve with a demanding and very rewarding route. The route will take us through lakes of glacial origin, an environment with a marked alpine character and beautiful views of peaks such as Tossa Plana de Lles. Before crossing the border we will pass through the circ d’Engorgs and the small refuge that bears the same name. Our first destination is the Refugi de l’Illa, declared World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2004.
Elevation: +1,200 meters. -900 meters; Distance: 14.47 km.
Today we will enjoy the wonderful natural environment of Andorra. This stage is full of lakes and we can contemplate the Envalira, Siscaró and Incles valleys. We will pass through the Pessons cirque, which is home to 12 beautiful lakes. The small Juclar refuge is located in a quite secluded and little-known corner that will allow us to relax and disconnect. It borders the largest lake in Andorra.
Elevation: +1,300 meters. -1,500 meters; Distance: 18.9 km
The journey continues towards the French Pyrenees. After skirting the first lake we climb the Juclar hill and the Alba hill. We have surpassed 2,500 m altitude and the views are impressive. We descend past the Alba, Couart and Pedourres ponds to the town of l’Ospitalet. We resume the climb to the Bésines refuge, a modest and very cozy building.
Elevation difference: +1,350 meters -1,500 meters; Distance: 19 km
The next stage, less demanding than the previous two, reveals the lakes of l’Estany de Lanós and La Bollosa. This route allows us to enjoy a variety of landscapes, from extensive green valleys like La Graba to more granite areas. We will reach our destination bordering the dam that supplies the great Refugi de les Bulloses.
Elevation: +800 meters -900 meters; Distance: 16 km
OPTION B: If the group is capable and wishes, you can ascend to Carlit peak (2,921 meters) on the French side, before descending to Les Bulloses on the Catalan side. This climb increases the gradient and the distance. It is the highest peak of the French department of the Pyrenees-Orientales and its panoramic views are exquisite.
We woke up ready to take advantage of this classic and beautiful Cerdanya itinerary. As we descend we find a slight change in more leafy vegetation. The town of Vilanova de les Escaldes, crossed by the Angustrina River and dotted with Roman architecture, welcomes us with all its Pyrenean charm.
Transfer from Vilanova de Escaldes to Puigcerdà. We say goodbye to an endearing experience.
Elevation: +150 meters -750 meters; Distance: 11.5 km

The 3 Nations Trekking offers great natural and cultural value. The extension of the route allows us to perceive the variety of landscapes, vegetation and even fauna typical of each region. Each stage shares kilometers with other known routes such as Carros de Foc or Conallacs.
We will move through less crowded areas where we can enjoy a true connection with nature. We will be able to immerse ourselves in different protected areas such as the Cerdanya – Alt Urgell National Reserve, the Catalan Pyrenees Regional Natural Park or the Orlú National Reserve.
The route is characterized by a profile typical of the High Mountains. Specifically, we highlight the large multitude of lakes of glacial origin in each stage, paradisiacal images that offer added value to the experience.
The altitude of the route, always above 2,000 m, gives us spectacular panoramic views of the Pyrenees, where we can recognize mythical peaks on both sides of the border.
