We invite you to explore the Pirinexus route by bicycle, a 340-kilometer route that offers a great variety of landscapes. This route crosses ancient forests, unique volcanoes, natural parks, vineyards and virgin coves.
This circular route will allow you to discover two territories with a lot of history: the regions of Girona and Vallespir. You will find historical paths such as those of Retirada, places that will transport you to Greek and Roman times such as the ruins of Empúries, and emblematic cities such as Girona.
Along the route you will find charming hotels, a renowned gastronomic and wine tradition, and services dedicated to cycle tourists. You will cycle along greenways, forest tracks and little-traveled roads.

We leave Girona following the Carrilet I route, towards Olot. The Carrilet I greenway is an old railway route with little accumulated unevenness, which runs through an environment with a high natural and heritage value. The greenway reaches Olot, which stands out for its high geological and landscape interest. The volcano interpretation center is a recommended visit to understand the surroundings of the municipality. Also worth highlighting is the volcanic cuisine, which calls for local products and local cuisine.
Leaving Olot, you must take the N-260, which goes up through the port of Coubet and Santigosa to Sant Joan de les Abadesses. This route runs on asphalt, with an average gradient of 4% over 22 kilometers. In Sant Joan de les Abadesses we recommend visiting the old town, following the route of the Secret of Sant Joan de les Abadesses.
Next, we take the greenway to Sant Pau de Segúries and cross the main road to take an uphill path that will take us to Camprodon. Leaving the town, once we have passed the Ritort River, we will begin to see high mountain landscapes. We will finish this second stage in Molló.
We begin this third day by climbing the Ares hill. At 1,510 meters, it is the highest point of the route and the border crossing into French territory. This pass stands out for its history as a route of escape into exile during the Spanish Civil War. At the highest point of the hill there is a memorial to these exiles.
Once past this point, we begin the descent towards Ceret, crossing the Vallespir. Ceret is the end of this stage, a charming town that stands out for its cherries.
We begin the fourth stage in Ceret, along paved roads going up to the Panissars pass (361 meters) to cross the border again. It must be taken into account that, during times of high forest risk, the port may be closed, with an alternative duly signposted on the French side. From here, the descent towards La Jonquera begins.
This is the most technically difficult point of the route. A descent begins along a sandy forest track with a high gradient. Therefore, it is recommended to drive with caution along this approximately 6 kilometer stretch. Once we have crossed La Jonquera, we continue towards the sea. Next, we will find the towns of Capmany and Peralada, which stand out for their wine-growing tradition, with wineries where we can enjoy a guided tour.
We leave Peralada and follow the route towards L’Escala. Before reaching the municipality, we will find the vestiges of the ancient Greek and Roman port of Sant Martí de Empúries.
We continue pedaling in the direction of Palafrugell. This section runs along tracks and secondary roads. This area stands out for its agricultural tradition, especially for its fruit fields. In Palafrugell we take the green route of the Petit Train, the old route of the little train that connected Palamós with Girona, passing through Bisbal d’Empordà. We finish this stage in Palamós, a town with a fishing tradition where you can visit the Fishing Museum. Likewise, if the times coincide, it is advisable to attend the fish auction.
Leaving Palamós, we will immediately connect with the Carrilet II route, the green route that connects Sant Feliu de Guíxols with Girona. This route follows the old route of the Girona – Sant Feliu de Guíxols narrow gauge train, from the Ridaura river valley to the Ter river basin.
We finish the stage and the route at the same starting point: the city of Girona. It is worth spending a day visiting the Old Quarter, where the call (Jewish quarter), the cathedral and the wall stand out. The city is also characterized by a rich gastronomic and leisure offer.
