On July 1, 1903, the first edition of the Tour de France was held, with the aim of selling more newspapers. It was held in six stages, with a total distance of 2,428 kilometres, which meant that some races took place at night on rough, unpaved roads.
The final winner of this first edition was Maurice Garin.
