Today we will move to the town of Kasese, located in the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains. Kasese’s location at the base of the Rwenzori Mountains and its proximity to Queen Elizabeth National Park make it a popular destination for travelers exploring the region. Kasese is known as the gateway to the Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the “Mountains of the Moon.”
This majestic mountain range offers stunning landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and challenging hiking opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking trails in Rwenzoris usually start in Kasese and attract adventurers from all over the world.
After an early breakfast at your hotel we begin our trek through Kasese. The guide will take us to the starting point. We will start in Trekkers at 1,450 meters. Those who are fit and want to proceed to Kalalama Camp at 3,134 meters can do so.
We begin by walking along the valley floor through the tall trees of the forest of the Afromontane Forest Zone. It is a constant climb with a multitude of birds and the possibility of seeing blue monkeys running through the forest. Visitors can sometimes see groups of 15 to 20 black and white colobus monkeys as they swing between the treetops.
There are sightings of the LHoest monkey, which are part of the cultural emblems of Bukonzo. Enocks Falls is just 200 meters away and offers a splendid opportunity to capture this moment to remember.
The hike starts at 8.30am and we will enter the Bamboo-Mimulopsis Zone, which is a steep climb with many high steps. In the rainy season, the bamboo area is quite muddy and slippery, making progress slow. However, the environment and the forest are beautiful areas as you ascend to 551 meters of altitude.
The distance to Kalalama Camp at 3,147 meters is 1.8 km. It is in the Heather-Rapanea area, where you can rest and have a cup of tea or coffee before heading to camp. For those hikers climbing Margherita or any of the main peaks, climbing Mutinda 3,975 meters is also a great way to acclimatize and reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
We begin our trip by ascending the rocky bed of a river, and we will cross a long stretch of swamps, some with walkways, until we reach the top of a high waterfall. From there we turned right and ascended briefly before descending Hunwicks Pass, a new trail that passes between two high peaks known as Twin Peaks. Here, keen observers will be able to spot a Hyrax or Red Diker, and several species of nesting falcons and eagles.
Continuing downwards, the trail crosses another bog rich in lobelia plants, then meanders through tall heather and large moss-covered rocks on the way to Kiharo Camp. Just 200 meters from the camp is Kiharo Falls, a picturesque waterfall cascading over moss-covered rocks, a highlight worth experiencing.
Today we will explore the forest area of the Rwenzori Mountains on a guided day hike. The trail descending from Kiharo Camp through the Nyamwamba Valley is mostly downhill and offers stunning views. The moss-covered rocks, waterfalls, deep valleys and forests are among the best in the Rwenzori Mountains.
Arriving at Forest View Camp at 2580 meters above sea level, we pause for a well-deserved lunch and drink, enjoying views of the dense forest, valley and town of Kilembe. It is a memorable experience and a fantastic end to the hike.
In the morning we will go on a guided safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park. In the afternoon we will enjoy a boat safari along the Kazinga canal.
Today’s adventure takes place between the iconic nature reserves of Queen Elizabeth National Park (home of tree-climbing lions) and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (more than 40% of mountain gorillas call this place their home).
The Birira River offers an exciting whitewater rafting adventure with continuous rapids that provide a rush of adrenaline and excitement. But the emotions extend beyond the rapids. Carved through a majestic canyon of the western Ugandan rainforest, Birira boasts a stunning emerald landscape that immerses you in its verdant beauty.
Navigate the rapids on an inflatable raft with a team of 2 to 6 paddlers, guided by an experienced professional. This intimate experience allows for a close encounter with the surrounding wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for the dazzling variety of birds and, with a little luck, you might even spot some monkeys watching your adventure unfold.
Expert guides will take you to a surprise stop along the riverbank, offering a unique and charming experience prepared by local people.
Very different to any other conservation area in Uganda, Lake Mburo National Park protects a cover of rolling acacia forest that appears to have been transplanted from Tanzania or Kenya. Here you can see hippos splashing in the lakes, buffalo drinking on the shore, leopards prowling at night, and a wide variety of plains herbivores, including zebras, impalas, and a reintroduced population of the rare Rothschild’s giraffe.
The park’s rich variety of waterfowl is complemented by several acacia-associated species found nowhere else in Uganda.
We will embark on a bicycle safari through Lake Mburo National Park in Uganda on an exciting adventure that immerses you in the heart of Africa’s wild beauty.
Cycling through this biodiverse landscape offers a unique perspective, allowing you to witness graceful zebras and impalas roaming freely, while giraffes stretch for leaves in the acacia trees.
The excitement intensifies as you navigate through dense forests and winding trails, each turn revealing the unexpected, perhaps a herd of buffalo grazing near the shore of Lake Mburo or a majestic eland crossing your path.
The connection with nature deepens with each pedal stroke, creating unforgettable moments amidst the vast, untouched nature of Uganda’s smallest savanna national park. Your Uganda safari may be coming to an end, but we believe you will have had an incredible time in this fascinating country.
