The number of mountain skiers in the Pyrenees continues to grow. And Andorra is, possibly, one of the greatest exponents of the phenomenon. According to data from the Andorra News Agency, the last fatal accident caused by an avalanche in Andorra took place in 2013. Since then there have not been any more, however, the “risk factor” has increased due to the growth of cross-country skiing (Skimo), but also snowshoeing.
In order to reduce it “to a minimum” and also to promote these sports in a safe manner, the Government of Andorra decided to launch at the beginning of the legislative period – together with the CENMA (Centre d’Estudis de la neu i la muntanya d’Andorra) – a project to classify the Andorran territory according to the danger of avalanches. With a budget of approximately 116,000 euros, partly financed by the comuns (town councils), the project is already beginning to see the light of day, with the installation of information panels and the launch of a website (www.allaus.ad) with all the information on mountain skiing routes that can be done in the country.
